Postcards – Assignment 1 – Introduce yourself

Brief: Design a series of at least three postcards that say something about who you are, your interests in graphic design and your wider cultural influenced or interests.

Postcard 1: If I were a view

The idea is to draw a picture using pencil then scan it and make it look aged, I was planning on doing a few test runs and do some samples but to be honest I stared drawing and I could not stop, everything in the image has its own meaning and makes up who I am. I worked off the idea of a ‘View’ Postcard because it is a snapshot of history, showing a scene that has changed over time or not longer exists.

Stage one…

I worked from scenes of nature to make up the images…

Postcard 2: My Roots

This Postcard shows what I have embedded in my roots, its things that will never change and as I grow so will my ethics, my culture and my ways of growing. I am a firm believer in sticking to your roots and using what you know and where you have come from to live your life in the best possible way.

Planning…

I did not do much planning on this card, once again it was a case of starting and seeing where my mind takes me, the idea was to show a tree with its roots exposed, I wanted to use a strong tree so I chose a Baobab. The orange and red background is the typical colours of a South African Sunset.

I will use the words I live by and what is most important to me at the base of the roots and then have the words ‘Now Blossom’ at the base of the tree, this is me saying as long as I stay true my my roots then my tree will forever be in full bloom.

Postcard 3: My Interest in Graphic Design

I decided to go for a abstract card, I focused on why graphic design interests me and what I enjoy about it. One of the things that attracts me to graphic design is how the human brain works and how it can be convinced to buy a products or service just by looking at a graphic or illustration, majority of us pass a judgement on a company just on how they have designed their logo or web page and that fascinates me.

The human brain is beautiful and powerful and I wanted to combined my fascination with human behavior and my passion for graphic design in this postcard.

I am still extremely rusty with Adobe but I would like to think that I am getting there, also spelling and grammar is definitely not my strong point so please excuse me… I am working on that too!

This assignment was more challenging than I expected you never really have to tell people who you are through images but once I got into it I started to enjoy it and I hope I managed to portray who I am, my interests in graphic design and my wider cultural interests.

Please feel free to comment and give your feedback I am here to learn so constructive criticisms is welcome and of course positive comments are always welcome!
