Exercise: Point of Sale Display

The Brief

Your local green grocer has asked you to produce a point of sale display to go above the fruit and vegetables in their shop. They want the display to be seen from the street through the shop windows to attract passing shoppers in order to boot their trade. The shop is in a small precinct which also houses a baker, a newsagent, an independent shoe shop and is on the route to an from a well respected primary school.

Brief Summary:

  • Design a point of sale display for fruit and veg
  • Sign must be visible and appealing to potential shoppers walking outside of the shop
  • ensure the fruit and veg graphics on the display is realistic at attractive

Key Words:

  • Display
  • Fruit and Veg
  • Visible from street
  • Attractive

Research

Existing displays:

My first point of research will be what signs are already used as the fruit and veg display so that I can get an idea of what colours, fonts and illustrations are commonly used.

From what I can see stores like using the ‘chalk board’ effect and using farmers baskets ad display techniques to make the display more attractive and organic looking as if the fruit has just been brought over by the local farmer, making the fruit and veg attractive to the consumer.

Popular colours used in displays:

Green

Red

Yellow

Orange

What the consumer is looking for?:

Organic fruit and vegetables are most popular with consumers it is a growing trend and if the store does not sell organic fruit and veg the make an effort to make the display look like the produce is fresh off of the farm, making the consumer more comfortable with buying the produce. Organic is also much more expensive then the regular produce provided in stores so if its a community and store that cant afford to go organic then making a farm friendly display is definitely a good idea.

Planning

I have decided to approach this task in a playful way, I have kids of my own and I know what they enjoy to see in the stores and it defiantly makes me take a step back and inspect what they getting so excited about, with a school being nearby there will be parents walking past or entering the store with their kids so making the display playful will be an advantage.

Brief extracts

‘Focus on the food, ensuring that it looks edible and would I eat the food?

I decided to use a full cartoon illustration, using real life food is a challenge because as a shopper I always compare the displays to the fresh produce on sale and I am always disappointed as you cant compare the two and we all know by now that display images are doctored to make the fruit look as attractive as they can however this is unrealistic and as a shopkeeper you cannot afford to disappoint the customers so I have focused on a cartoon illustration, that way the shopper has nothing to compare the fruit and veg to.

The most important things to remember are what the shopkeeper wants to achieve and who the message is for (the audience). The poster will be seen from quite a distance and mainly in the peoples peripheral vision so the visuals need to be clear and dramatic’

I have use a farm setting that would be attractive and welcomed by the potential shoppers, being in a busy center it is a peaceful setting and would catch the attention of people walking by as it is big enough to look like a window showing a farmers land, I have blown it up on my TV and asked family to walk past my lounge window at all of them said it got their attention.

It is a playful design and would appeal to all ages, encouraging people to stop and shop!

I believe that my design is something the shop keeper is looking for and would satisfy all his requirements.

‘Identify the most appropriate software to complete the job’

I have used Photo shop to complete my poster and I must admit I used a bit of Power Point as I am still getting use to using the other software.

Too much or not enough information?

I think I have let the wording and illustrations speak for itself, I believe that there is just the right amount of information on the posters.
